WHY CHOOSE THE CENTRAL SYSTEM FOR FLY FISHING?

The Central System is a mountain range located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, crossing the so-called Central Plateau. The highest peak in this range is Mount Almanzor (2592 m above sea level), situated in the Sierra de Gredos. Gredos is renowned for its stunning Spanish Ibex, as well as the opportunity to fly fish in its rivers with granitic origins.

Throughout the foothills of the Central System, and particularly in the Sierra de Gredos, one can engage in fly fishing for wild trout. These trout trace their lineage back to the Tajo and Duero basins, representing pre-Pleistocene Atlantic origins. Additionally, within the Natural Park of Sierra de Gredos, there are lagoons hosting a robust population of brook trout introduced in the 1960s.

The Central System offers other compelling attractions in this mountain range:

  • The chance to fly fish for barbel in reservoirs near the Extremaduran dehesa (Siberia Region).
  • Proximity to Madrid, with the opportunity to fish in an intensive fishing stretch known as the “Coto del Molino de la Horcajada” along the Lozoya River.
  • The possibility of fishing the lower part of the Tormes River for trout and large hucho, contingent upon water releases. One of these renowned fishing zones is known as the “Coto de Villagonzalo.”
