Madrid’s trout season is defined by the Community of Madrid’s annual fishing order. Planning around these dates matters.
- March: Season opens on the second Sunday. Spring flows, aggressive fish after winter. Best window for the Lozoya and Guadarrama rivers. Good for all formats.
- April–May: Warming water, consistent hatches, strong dry fly action. The most reliable window across all rivers and both mountain ranges.
- June–July (to third Sunday): Final weeks of trout season. Heat pushes the best fishing to early mornings. High-altitude Gredos water stays productive longest. After mid-July, trout rivers close.
- August–September: Trout season closed for most rivers. Intensive zones remain open year-round. Pike, carp and barbel fishing continues in reservoirs. Multi-day anglers can mix species.
- October–November: Catch-and-release season on some zones. Cooler conditions, autumn light, fewer anglers. Good window for self-guided fishing.
