Why fly fish in León
León is the province with the longest history associated with fly fishing in Spain. Traditionally, this province has been fished using a fishing modality that is known worldwide as fishing the Leones way.
The «Leones way» is a fishing technique with rods but using «drowned flies» tied with a Leon rooster feather. The Leonese roosters are raised in the valley of the Curueño River, and their feathers are sold in fishing shops worldwide.
The first fishing references to the «Leones way» date from 1624, in the Astorga Manuscript.
The main rivers of the province of León run from north to south and originate in the Cantabrian Mountains. There are wild rivers and others regulated by reservoirs. Regulated rivers allow us to offer good fishing guarantees even in the most adverse conditions.
The most famous rivers for fly fishing in León are the Sil, the Órbigo, Porma, Esla, Carrión, Torio… from our operations center located in Villafranca del Bierzo, you can fish for up to 9 different rivers within a maximum radius of one hour, from small mountain rivers perfect for fishing small trout with a dry fly to large plain rivers where trophy trout can be fished with a dry fly and nymphs.
The first month of the season (beginning of March and month of April) is a perfect time to fish for sizeable dry fly trout in the central hours of the day. June and July are excellent times to fish for the unregulated rivers and mountain streams. September and October are exceptional for fishing the regulated rivers once the water release season to irrigate corn crops has ended.
In León you can fish in unique places: next to medieval villages, under bridges on which pilgrims walk who make the Camino de Santiago (Christian pilgrimage route of medieval origin that go to the tomb of Santiago el Mayor, located in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela) or in rivers lost in the heart of the Natural Parks such as Babia and Luna.

What you'll catch in León
León has earned the title of the trout fly-fishing capital of Spain, largely due to hosting the International Trout Week of León. This annual event brings together local and visiting anglers for thrilling trout fishing competitions and other fishing-related activities.
It’s noteworthy that the province of León boasts over 3,000 kilometers of trout-filled rivers, transforming it into a natural paradise for fishing enthusiasts. While the reigning species that can be caught from the capital city of León is the brown trout, there are also opportunities to fish for other species, including:
Wild Brown Trout (Trucha Común)
Rainbow Trout (Trucha Arcoíris)
Carp (Carpa)
Barbel (Barbo)
Pike (Lucio)
When to fish León
Season dates vary by province and water type. The table below reflects current regulations — always confirm dates for the specific province and river before your trip, as the annual fishing order can introduce changes
León fly fishing season calendar by period and water type
| Period | Species / Water | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Open March 25 | Trout — all León rivers | Season opening across the province. Rivers still cold post-winter; book cotos early. |
| April – May | Trout | Rising temperatures, reliable hatches, prime dry fly. Best overall window. |
| June | Trout | Water dropping. Hatches shifting to evening. Still productive. |
| Closes July 31 | Free-flowing water (aguas libres) | All open water closes for trout. Many cotos remain open. |
| Extended Aug – late Sep | Cotos not regulated by reservoirs | Extended trout season. León cotos typically close late September. |
| Closes October 15 | Cotos regulated by reservoirs | Latest trout fishing, on reservoir-fed stretches (Riaño, Barrios de Luna). |
| Year-round | Barbel, carp, pike (non-trout water) | Pike peaks November – February. |
Permits and Regulations
Fishing in León is governed by LAW 9/2013 on Fishing in Castilla y León and updated by annual fishing orders per province. Most productive trout water falls into one of two categories:
Cotos de pesca (controlled stretches)
Limited daily rods, advance permits required, catch-and-release on the best zones. These are the stretches worth fishing.
Aguas libres (open water)
Accessible with a valid licence, but typically more pressure and lower fish quality.
The permit system means you cannot show up and sort access on the day. The best cotos fill weeks ahead during peak season. For self-guided trips, that’s the difference between fishing quality water and wasting a travel day.
For guided trips and packages, we handle everything, regional licence, coto reservations, documentation and compliance per stretch per day. You don’t need to read the regulation. Tell us your dates and we confirm what applies.

Fishing licences in Castile and León
To fish in Castile and León, a valid fishing licence is required in addition to any coto permits. Foreign visitors have two options:
- Interregional Fishing Licence: Valid across multiple autonomous communities: Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León, Comunidad Valenciana, Extremadura, Galicia and Madrid. The practical option for anglers combining Castile and León with other Spanish regions on the same trip.
- Regional Licence for Castilla y León: Valid within the autonomous community only. Processed online with payment by credit card. Required information includes NIF/NIE or IDESP/TIE, name, surnames and date of birth. Free for residents of Castilla y León over the age of 65.
- For guided trips and packages: we process licences on your behalf — you don’t need to navigate the platform yourself. For self-guided trips, we provide instructions and support for the process before you travel.
Fly fishing guides in León
There is currently no specific regulation in Castilla y León governing the activity of fly fishing guides. To work legally as a guide, it is necessary to be employed by a regulated company or operate as a registered self-employed professional (autónomo).
The absence of specific regulation has led to the presence of seasonal workers with limited technical knowledge offering guide services that may lack proper insurance and professional standards.
Our recommendation — and the approach we take ourselves — is to book through a regulated travel agency or company that carries full liability and accident insurance and works with experienced, professionally prepared guides.
When you book with Spain Fly Fishing Guides, that’s what you get: a legally structured operation, insured, English-speaking guides with real knowledge of the rivers and regulations, and a service that takes responsibility for your day on the water.
Planning your León fly fishing trip
The right trip depends on your time, experience and which part of the region you want to explore.
One day available? Guided day trip from León city. We put you on the right water and handle everything.
3–5 days available? Multi-day package across multiple rivers. Most popular format for U.S. travelers making this the primary destination.
Experienced angler, flexible schedule? Self-guided gives you full independence. Permits and access handled before you arrive.
Combining with the Pyrenees? León and the Pyrenees make a natural 5–7 day combination — interior meseta rivers versus mountain gradient, two very different environments on one itinerary. We can coordinate both.
Winter travel? Pike fishing in the reservoirs and slow stretches of the Duero system is at its peak in winter. A legitimate off-season trip for anglers who want something different.
Accommodation and logistics in Leon
- For day trips: Most visitors base in León city. We provide hotel pick-up and return by evening. The city has good hotels, strong restaurants and a historic center that keeps non-fishing companions well occupied.
- For multi-day packages: We arrange accommodation in practical bases close to the best river access — towns in the León river valleys, from the Esla and Porma around Riaño to the Órbigo near Astorga or the Sil in El Bierzo. Less driving, earlier starts, better rhythm. We confirm the logistics based on which rivers your itinerary covers.
- For self-guided fishing: You choose accommodation based on which rivers you’re targeting. We provide base recommendations if you want them.

Frequently asked questions about fly fishing in León
Is fly fishing better in León or the Pyrenees?
Different trips, different purposes. The Pyrenees offer mountain rivers and a vacation-style setting, better suited for a first fly fishing trip to Spain or for anglers who want alpine character. León offers a larger and more varied fishery, technically demanding interior rivers, and a deeper fishing heritage, better for experienced anglers or those who want to combine fishing with Spain’s cultural interior. Many anglers do both. If you’re not sure which fits your trip, tell us your dates and we’ll recommend the right format.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
Not for guided trips or packages. We provide rods, reels, waders and flies. If you’re traveling light, tell us when you inquire. If you have your own setup, bring it, a 5–6 weight, 9 ft, medium-fast action rod covers most situations on the rivers here.
What skill level do I need?
For guided trips, intermediate level is enough, clean casts at 30–40 feet and a basic mend. The guide handles the rest. For self-guided, we expect solid experience with nymph and dry fly fishing on moving water. If you’re unsure which format fits, tell us and we’ll give you a straight answer.
When exactly does the trout season open?
How far in advance should I book?
For peak season (April–June), the best cotos fill 4–8 weeks out. September and the extended coto season have more flexibility. If your travel dates are fixed, contact us early, permit availability shapes the itinerary.
Can I combine a guided day with a self-guided day?
Yes. Some anglers prefer one day with a guide to learn the river and a second day fishing it independently. We can structure that into the same trip.
What if river conditions are poor when I arrive?
We monitor conditions actively. If there’s a serious issue — flooding, unexpected closures — we’ll contact you before you travel where possible and work to find an alternative. We won’t confirm a session on blown-out water without options.
Is the fishing catch-and-release?
The best coto stretches operate under mandatory catch-and-release. Some open-water sections allow retention within legal limits. We’ll confirm the rules for every stretch before you fish it.
Can I fish here in winter?
Yes — for pike. Pike fishing on the Duero reservoirs and slow river sections peaks between November and February, outside the trout season. If you want to fish Spain in winter, this is the most productive option in the region.
Can non-fishing companions come along?
On guided days and packages, non-fishing companions typically spend the day exploring independently, the cities and towns in this region give them plenty to do. River access on guided sessions is for fishing only, but confirm case by case depending on the stretch.
