WHAT SPECIES CAN BE FLY-FISHED IN ANDALUSIA?
In Andalusia, three species are of great interest for fly fishing:
- Brown Trout: The wild trout in Andalusia are considered unique lineages, being the southernmost trout rivers in Europe. Some rivers host trout with a high degree of introgression due to past stockings of brown trout from Central European origin. The Andalusian Regional Government is actively working on population reinforcement with 100% native fish, repopulating waters with eggs, fry, juveniles, and adults. These efforts have significantly improved their status and genetic variability. The initiatives are carried out through aquaculture facilities, both public (such as the Center for Conservation and Breeding of Continental Water Species La Ermita, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development) and private (Las Fuentes Fish Farm in Huéscar).
- Rainbow Trout: The rainbow trout is an exotic species used for stocking some reservoirs and rivers for fishing purposes.
- Barbel: The Gypsy or Andalusian Barbel (Luciobarbus Sclateri) is a large fish species known for its strength. Endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, it is primarily found in river basins such as the Guadalquivir, Segura, Guadalhorce, Guadalete, lower Guadiana tributaries, and small basins in southern Spain. In the region, two other species of barbel, the common barbel, and the comizo, can also be found.
FLY FISHING SEASON IN ANDALUSIA
To engage in fly fishing in Andalusia, it is essential to consult the fishing regulations, as each species has specific months during which fishing is permitted and others when it is prohibited:
- Trout: The open season for common trout begins on May 1 and concludes on October 15, both inclusive. However, in the stretch of free waters of the Zumeta River, shared with the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha, the season runs from April 1 to September 30.
- Barbel: The fishing season for barbel extends from July 1 to February 25, both inclusive.
For both trout and barbel, fishing is allowed every day of the week during the established periods for inland fishing.

FLY FISHING LICENSE IN THE ANDALUSIAN REGION
The fishing license for rivers and lakes in Andalusia is an individual and non-transferable administrative document required for legally engaging in freshwater fishing in the region. Obtaining the license involves passing an exam or completing a course demonstrating proficiency and knowledge in fishing-related matters, organized by the Consejería. Licenses are recorded in the corresponding Andalusian Registry of Hunting and Continental Fishing and can be valid for one, three, or five years, depending on the applicant’s choice. The process can be carried out online or in person, following established regulations. Specific forms must be submitted, mandatory fees self-assessed, and required documentation provided, including the payment receipt for fees and a certificate issued by the National Registry of Offenders in Hunting and Fishing.
Currently, these conditions make fly fishing nearly impossible for foreign anglers, but the situation is expected to change soon, eliminating the need for the angler’s exam for foreign tourists.
PERMITS OR FISHING PRESERVES FOR FLY FISHING IN ANDALUSIA
Fishing preserves in Andalusia are bodies of water designated as such by the competent Department of the Environment, following the approval of a technical fishing plan and properly marked and delimited. To fish in these preserves, a license and a special day-fishing permit are required. There is no specific deadline for requesting this authorization. The process can be completed online or in person, requiring the presentation of the fishing license and the payment receipt for the corresponding fees.
